Shaving should be a relaxing part of your grooming routine, not something that leaves your skin irritated and full of razor bumps. In this men’s shaving guide, you’ll learn how to shave properly using the right preparation, technique, and post-shave care to achieve a smooth, comfortable, irritation-free shave every time.
So let’s get started. There are 4 fundamental steps in getting an irritation free shave.
1) Hydrate and Cleanse
Unless you’re shaving immediately after a shower—which is actually the best time to shave since your skin is already clean and hydrated—you’ll need to properly cleanse and hydrate both your skin and facial hair beforehand.
Hydration is crucial because it softens the hair by allowing it to absorb water, making it much easier to cut. Softer hair means less tugging, fewer passes with the razor, and ultimately less irritation.
For this step, you don’t need anything fancy or expensive. A simple hydrating bar soap, such as Dove, works perfectly well to soften facial hair and remove dirt, oil, and debris from the skin.
You can also use a gentle facial cleanser that contains hyaluronic acid, which acts like a moisture magnet to help keep your skin and hair soft before shaving.
If you’re prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps, consider using a face wash that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells and helping to keep pores clear.
This significantly reduces the chances of hair becoming trapped under the skin, making it an excellent option for preventing post-shave irritation, razor bumps, and ingrown hairs.
Regardless of the cleanser you use, apply it gently using your fingertips and leave it on for at least one minute. This allows the skin to fully hydrate and gives the hair enough time to soften, making shaving much smoother and less irritating.
2) Shaving Cream/Gel
If you are prone to shaving irritation whether that be razor burn or ingrown hairs you need to choose a shaving cream that provides really good glide (slickness) and has milder ingredients that work better for sensitive skin.
The Proraso Sensitive Shaving Cream is a great option to get a smooth shave. It produces a really slick and protective lather that helps to soften your hair while allowing the razor to glide seamlessly over your skin. I’ve used this shaving cream for over 8 years and have always gotten an excellent shave with no issues.
Moreover, unlike a lot of shaving creams that leave the skin feeling dry and tight after the shave, this Proraso leaves my skin soft and with no redness. It contains green tea and oatmeal which really do help in soothing the skin and reducing redness.
But if you prefer shaving gels, then this is probably the best you can buy. My best friend from University used to suffer from really bad razor bumps and redness and his dermatologist recommended him to use this and only this shaving gel. He’s since been hooked on this shaving gel and it has drastically reduced his issues with post-shave irritation.
It’s specially formulated to be non-irritating and provide excellent glide during the shave. I recently used this shave gel exclusively on travel and I was pleasantly happy with the results. I shaved with this gel maybe 12 times for a complete month and experienced absolutely no redness, bumps or irritation.
My skin also felt soft and hydrated afterward, which I’m guessing comes from the moisturizing lubricants, oat, and Vitamin E that help soothe dry skin.

3) Shaving Technique and Choosing a Razor
The best shaving experience is had when your skin and hair are soft and the razor blade is super sharp. This effortlessly cuts your hair without any drag or risks of cuts.
Choosing the Right Razor
When it comes to razors, you have two solid options that work well for both beginners and men looking to improve their shaving experience and reduce irritation: a safety razor or a cartridge razor designed for sensitive skin.
Safety Razor
Safety razors are great because they use a single blade to cut hair at the skin level which drastically reduces the chances of developing ingrown hairs. Another benefit of shaving with a safety razor is that because they are heavier than a typical cartridge razor and because the blades are super sharp you need to apply very minimal pressure in order to shave. This alone reduces the risk of razor burn and irritation.
A fantastic safety razor to get started with is the Merkur 34C. Precision-made in Germany from solid metal, it’s an excellent choice because it’s mild, forgiving, and ideal for men who are looking to start shaving with a safety razor.
For razor blades, I recommend Astra Greens, as they work well for most skin types and are easy to find.
Cartridge Razors
If you’re more comfortable using a cartridge razor, choose one specifically designed for sensitive skin and with fewer blades. A great option is the Gillette SkinGuard.
This razor features only two blades that are spaced farther apart, which helps reduce friction and irritation. It has also been clinically proven to reduce shaving irritation, making it one of the better cartridge options for men prone to razor burn and ingrown hairs.
In order to get the best experience from cartridge razors, it’s really important to replace the cartridge weekly if you shave daily. Also, store the razor in a dry place (not the bathroom) after shaving. That will help extend it’s life and prevent any bacterial growth due to moisture.
Shaving Technique
But what about technique? You should use short strokes in the direction of hair growth (for most men this just means shaving down your cheeks) with minimal pressure applied to your face. Rinsing the razor blade after 2 or 3 strokes also helps because it keeps the blade(s) clean and allows for a more efficient shave.
Avoid shaving against the grain. While it may feel closer initially, it pulls on the hair and significantly increases the risk of ingrown hairs and razor bumps.
You should also avoid pulling your skin taut while shaving. Stretching the skin can cause the hair to be cut too short, and once the skin relaxes, the hair can retreat beneath the surface, increasing the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
Try to aim for a single pass shave meaning you shave over an area just once. Once you are done with the first pass, it’s okay to go back and shave certain areas that you’ve missed but make sure you apply shaving cream! Trying to shave without shaving cream is a great way to get skin irritation.
4) Post Shave
I strongly recommend against using alcohol based aftershaves because they can dry out your skin and even cause burning and irritation. We don’t live in the Middle Ages so you don’t need alcohol to disinfect your face! As long as you are using a clean razor blade and washing your face with a cleanser (before shaving) you are good to go!
Also, avoid products with heavy fragrances because that can irritate the skin. Look for lotions and aftershaves for sensitive skin because after you shave, every man’s skin is sensitive and prone to irritation!
What works fantastic as an aftershave is a good quality moisturizer. I personally use the Curel Hydrating Lotion because it contains ceramides that help lock in moisture in the skin and help it recover after the shave. It even scratches my itch for that cooling sensation after shaving because it contain eucalyptus oil extract.
Honestly, I’ve tried tonnes of after shaves and lotions but the Curel works the best for me.
If you really do want to use a dedicated aftershave product then the Nivea Sensitive Soothing Post Shave Balm is a great option. It’s affordable and contains glycerine, chamomile, Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E which help soothe and replenish the skin.
Final Thoughts
Shaving doesn’t have to be a hassle or a painful chore you dread. It can—and should—be a moment to relax and enjoy the process. After all, for many of us, it’s something we’ll probably be doing for the rest of our lives. As such, I hope this guide on how to shave without irritation helps make your next shave the smoothest, most comfortable one yet!
