How Should Men’s Shorts Fit (Fit Guide 2025)
Shorts are a casual yet versatile staple in men’s summer wardrobes, so getting the fit right is key to looking well-dressed. This guide will walk you through how men’s shorts should fit — covering the waist, hips, leg, and length.
How Should Men’s Shorts Fit

Waist
The waist of your shorts should fit exactly the same as your other pants like jeans and chinos. This means the waist should fit slightly snug and you should be able to comfortably wear them without a belt. This is because shorts are typically made from materials like cotton and linen which will stretch slightly as you wear them.
Don’t buy shorts that are too loose in the waist because you won’t be able to wear them without a belt. Also avoid too tight of a fit.
Main Point: If you can button them comfortably and wear them without a belt, you have a good fit.
Length
This is the most important aspect of fit when it comes to shorts. So many men tend to get this wrong and then they look sloppy while wearing shorts.
Shorts tend to come in 3 standard inseam lengths; 5, 7 and 9 inches.
Every man has a different length torso and legs so I don’t recommend relying solely on the inseam measurement. Instead, try on a few different lengths and choose the pair that best matches the fit guide photo (above).
Most men look best in shorts that end about 1 to 3 inches above the knee. But there are exceptions.
For taller gentlemen, especially those over 6 feet, your shorts should end about 1 inch above the knee. This creates a more balanced, proportional look to match your height.

If you’re a shorter gentleman, below 5’7, then the ideal length would be 3 inches above your knee. This will make your legs look longer which in turn will make you appear taller.

If you’re an average height, 5’8 to 5’11, then look for shorts that end 1 to 3 inches above your knee (check the fit guide photo above).
Avoid shorts that are too short (pun intended!). You don’t want to be the guy who looks like he forgot to put on his pants and is just rocking boxer briefs instead!

Also don’t wear shorts that go below your knee. It looks juvenile.

Leg
Look for shorts that have a straight or slim straight fit through the leg. You should be able to pinch around 2 to 3 inches of excess fabric on either side of your leg. This will ensure a fitted yet comfortable look.

You want to avoid the baggy look at all costs because it just ruins the look of your entire outfit.

Also please don’t go with skinny shorts. This image below should be enough to convince you!

Recommendations of well-fitting shorts
Bonobos Shorts
Bonobos is my go-to brand for men’s shorts. They offer a wide range of fabrics, from cotton and linen to performance blends. On top of that, their shorts come in three different fits (standard, slim, and athletic) and two lengths (5″ and 7″), so you can get something that feels practically custom-made.
Spier & Mackay Dress Shorts
These are dressier shorts, perfect for summer dinners with a button-down or polo. They feel more elevated than typical shorts, with refined Italian fabrics, side adjusters, double-button closures, and pleated fronts which lend them a formal look.

Everlane Everyday 9″ Short

A great everyday option you can wear casually with a t-shirt or a button-down. The fabric is durable, has enough stretch for comfort, and is designed to hold up well after repeated washes. I especially recommend Everlane for taller men or anyone who prefers longer shorts, as they offer a 9-inch inseam.
