The Merkur 37C is one of the most popular slant safety razors you can buy today—but who is this safety razor really designed for? In this in-depth Merkur 37C review, I’ll cover my personal experience with its design, build quality, and shaving performance to help you decide if this razor is worth buying.
Design
The Merkur 37C is a 2-piece slant bar safety razor meaning that the razor blade is actually twisted which allows it to slice hair rather than just cut it.
It’s hard to explain, but once you shave with it (or read the shaving experience portion of the review below) you’ll get a better idea.
Other than the slant bar, the 37C is practically identical to the 34C in both length and weight.
Shaving Experience
I have been blessed with thick and dense facial hair meaning I usually rely on the sharpest of blades in my safety razors in order to achieve an efficient and comfortable shave. But even with the sharpest of blades, I still occasionally get tugging/pulling which can be really annoying and painful while shaving.
So when I asked for recommendations on shaving forums (yes that’s a thing!), pretty much everyone recommended that I give the Merkur 37C a shot. As it cost only $60, I thought why not? Maybe it’s just the safety razor I’ve been waiting for! And that’s the thing about safety razors. Although you spend a bit upfront, the cost per use over years is absolutely minimal. Anyway, enough justifying my financial decisions—let’s get back to the Merkur 37C.
The first time I tried the 37C I was impressed with it’s smoothness and efficiency. I used my favourite Gillette 7 O’clock SharpEdge (yellow) blades and found that the 37C sliced my hair with absolutely no tugging. After that shave, I really started to question why I have all these other razors in my shaving den.
But is the Merkur 37C for you?
Now here’s the rundown. The 37C is great for men with thicker stubble but if you don’t have very dense facial hair then you might find the benefit of the 37C over the 34C to be minimal.
Moreover, even with a slant bar, the 37C is not designed to shave off a long beard, but rather dense hair. So if you have a beard, then I would recommend either using a trimmer to shorten the hair length or to opt for the Muhle R41 (if you’re feeling brave!).
But for those with dense and thick hair growth who routinely experience tugging/pulling with other safety razors, then the Merkur 37C truly is a game changer. It slices off hair effortlessly and just feels smooth with no hair tugging/pulling.
Build Quality
The Merkur 37C has the exact same build quality as the Merkur 34C meaning the handle is made of brass while the head is made from zinc alloy. The razor is then chrome plated which gives it a very smooth finish that glides along your face as you shave.
Merkur has some of the best chrome plating and I’ve never had any issues with the plating degrading over time even with years of use.
Price
The Merkur 37C retails for around $60 and I think this is a fantastic price considering how well this razor works for those with thicker facial hair. Like all Merkur razors, the 37C has been manufactured in Solingen Germany since so you’re getting a safety razor with a rich history.
Most other slant bar razors don’t provide the same smoothness that the 37C does and those that do cost a lot more.
Merkur 37C VS 39C
The Merkur 37C and the 39C share the same slanted razor head meaning both are similar in efficiency with the caveat being that the 39C is significantly longer and heavier.
I also found that shaving with the 37C is easier mainly because the razor is smaller and easily manoeuvrable while the longer handle of the 39C made it a bit more tricky finding the right cutting angle.
So unless you have bear hands, I would recommend getting the 37C.
Final Thoughts
I hope you enjoyed this in-depth review of the Merkur 37C. If you have thick and dense facial hair and struggle with hair pulling/tugging then the Merkur 37C is a must-try! Pair it with your favourite blade and you may be surprised at just how smooth and effortless your shaves can feel.
