There are hundreds, if not thousands, of safety razors available on Amazon. But most of them are cheaply made or mass-marketed razors that won’t deliver a comfortable shave or last very long. That’s why I’ve put together this list of the 7 best safety razors on Amazon, all of which I’ve personally tried and tested.

I want to highlight the fact that there is no such thing as the best safety razor, but rather the best safety razor for your needs. For example, if you’re a beginner or only have light stubble, you don’t need the Mühle R41. On the other hand, if you have very coarse hair, the Henson AL13 won’t deliver the results you’re looking for.

As such, I’ve categorized the safety razors I recommend based on your shaving needs, whether you’re a beginner, a daily shaver, someone who wants a high-quality but affordable razor, or someone with coarse hair who needs a lawnmower in the shape of a safety razor.

1. Henson AL13 — Best for Absolute Beginners

If you’re switching from a cartridge razor to a safety razor, I highly recommend the Henson AL13 as a first razor. One of the hardest things for beginners is getting the shaving angle right, but the Henson makes this very easy. The head is designed so that you can simply place it against your skin and you’re pretty much at the correct angle. It also has very little blade exposure, which greatly reduces the chances of cutting yourself.

The build quality is excellent as well. It’s made in Canada from aerospace-grade aluminum (yes, that’s a thing!) and comes in a ton of different colours. If you’ve never used a safety razor before, this is one of the easiest ones to learn with.

I actually bought the Henson for my best friend when he wanted to start using a safety razor but was worried about cutting himself. He really liked it and found it very easy to use, especially for daily shaves. For me, however, it was a little too mild for my coarse stubble.

2. Merkur 34C — Best Everyday Safety Razor

The Merkur 34C is arguably one of the most recommended safety razors of all time, and there’s good reason for that. Merkur has been manufacturing and selling safety razors since 1920. Any company that’s been in business for over 100 years must be doing something right!

The 34C feels compact yet substantial in your hands. It’s a high-quality, heavyweight razor that works particularly well for men with mild to moderate facial hair growth who want an efficient razor that delivers a close shave with little to no irritation.

Pros:

• German made and engineered high quality razor
• Great for daily shaves

Cons:

• Might struggle with longer stubble and coarse hair

3. Merkur 37C — Best for Thick & Coarse Stubble

If you have very dense stubble like me, however, the 37C is the better option. It’s practically identical to the 34C in terms of weight and length, but what sets it apart is the slant head. It might look a little funky at first, but the design does wonders when it comes to shaving dynamics.

The slant head creates more of a slicing action as it cuts through the hair, which makes the 37C particularly good for thick stubble and coarse hair. In my experience, this makes a noticeable difference when shaving longer stubble because there’s much less tugging and pulling.

If I’m shaving every day, I’ll happily use either the 34C or 37C. But because I have dense, coarse hair, if I haven’t shaved for a couple of days, I always reach for the 37C. It has pretty much eliminated the tugging and pulling that I used to experience with other razors.

Pros:

• Great for men with coarse facial hair
• Practically eliminates tugging/pulling 

Cons:

• Only needed if you have coarse hair otherwise stick with the Merkur 34C

4. King C. Gillette — Best Affordable Safety Razor

If you’re looking for an affordable safety razor that delivers an outstanding shave, the King C. Gillette is my top recommendation. What really surprised me about this razor is just how good it is for the price. The build quality is excellent, and in my experience, the shaving performance is very similar to the Merkur 34C. It’s just as easy to use and delivers a very similar shave, despite the King C. Gillette being considerably cheaper.

Another thing you might like about the King C. Gillette is the longer handle. The Merkur 34C has a relatively short handle, which some people love, but I know there are plenty of men who have larger hands and may prefer a longer handle safety razor.

The build quality is honestly exceptional for the price. This isn’t a razor you’ll need to replace after a year or two—you can easily get 5+ years (if not more) out of it with proper care. If I had to nitpick one thing, it’s the King C. Gillette branding on the top of the razor head. Personally, I don’t love the way it looks, although I’ve seen plenty of other reviewers who actually like it.

Pros:

• Outstanding build quality and shaving performance that rivals the Merkur 34C
• Longer handle, which some may prefer
• Excellent value for money

• I personally don’t like the branding on the razor head

5. Rockwell 6C — Best Adjustable Safety Razor

The Rockwell 6C is probably my most used safety razor when I’m shaving daily. The main selling point of the 6C and 6S is that they’re adjustable, meaning you can change how aggressive the razor is depending on the plate you use. Both razors come with three reversible plates with settings from 1 to 6, with 1 being the mildest and 6 being the most aggressive.

Personally, I don’t really see much reason to use plate 1 because I find it overly mild. Plate 2 is probably the best balance between safety and efficiency, and I’d recommend starting there if you’re new to safety razors. Plates 3 and 4 are similar to the shaving dynamics of the Merkur 34C, while plates 5 and 6 are useful if you have several days of stubble to shave through.

The 6C is a fantastic razor because of its weight and head design. It glides over the skin effortlessly and cuts through hair with very little, if any, irritation. Being able to change the plate also means you can use the same razor whether you’re shaving every day or once every few days. It’s also a great option because you can start with a milder setting as a beginner and move to more aggressive settings as you get more experienced using a safety razor. 

Pros:

• Six different settings in one razor
• Excellent balance of efficiency and comfort
• Great for both beginners and experienced shavers
• Very good build quality

Cons:

• Plate 1 is too mild for my liking
• Slightly more expensive than a basic safety razor (but you’re essentially getting 3 razors in one!)

6. Rockwell 6S — Best Buy-It-Once Adjustable Safety Razor

Simply put, the Rockwell 6S is the stainless steel version of the 6C. The 6C is already a very durable razor, but the 6S takes things a step further and is practically a buy-it-once-and-use-it-for-life razor.

I’m very careful with my razors, so I’m perfectly happy with my 6C. But if I were recommending a razor to someone who wants to buy just one safety razor and use it for the rest of their life, the 6S would be my pick. The stainless steel construction makes it practically indestructible, and because you get the same six shaving settings as the 6C, you don’t have to sacrifice versatility either.

7. Mühle R41 — Best for Experienced Shavers with Very Coarse Hair

The Mühle R41 is truly a niche safety razor. Because of its head design, this razor is exceptionally efficient at cutting through long hair. In fact, there are YouTube videos of people shaving off long beards with the R41!

I’ve owned my R41 for over 8 years now, and I’ve probably used it about 5 times in total. The reason for that is simple: this razor is really good at one thing—cutting through really long stubble. I don’t see much point in using it for daily shaves because you’re increasing your chances of irritation when there are better and more comfortable options for everyday shaving.

I’m sure someone will argue that you can get an amazing shave with the R41 in just one pass compared to the two or three passes you might need with the 34C or any other safety razor. And that’s true. But getting an irritation-free and nick-free shave with the R41 requires a lot more concentration on your technique. I don’t know about you, but I want to feel relaxed and enjoy myself while shaving, not be constantly thinking about whether I’m going to nick myself.

I also think the R41 is a great razor to have if you’re a collector. It’s relatively affordable and there’s simply nothing else quite like it on the market. There might even come a day when it’s discontinued, and you’ll be glad you picked one up. I have to admit, one of the reasons I bought mine (don’t tell my wife!) was because I wanted it in my collection.

Pros:

• Extremely efficient for long stubble and beards
• Can deliver a very close shave in just one pass

Cons:

• Can cause cuts and irritation if your technique isn’t on point
